Lena Johannesen

Growing up in Oslo, Norway, International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Pro Figure star, Lena Johannesen enthusiastically participated in soccer, basketball, and various aerobic activities. During the early 80’s, looking for a new physical challenge, Lena turned to weight training and joined the same gym as her mom, who coincidently was one of the first woman bodybuilders in Norway.
Lena cultivated a real love for developing her body and began competing in bodybuilding competitions. In 1995, she switched to fitness and placed 5th in the Norwegian Championship. In 1996, the IFBB held a Pro Fitness competition in Norway with the top five athletes from the recent Norwegian championship receiving a special invite to compete. Some of the leading stars in fitness such as Mia Finnegan, Dale Tomita and Saryn Muldrow competed for the title. Lena came in 4th place barely missing a qualification to the Fitness Olympia. |

It’s hard to believe, but it was eleven years ago today, that i got my first commission as a photographer by Joe Weider. Muscle & Fitness had seen some of my photos from earlier shoots I had done with Sharon Bruneau and Ericca Kern in motel rooms. So they asked if I would travel to the Arnold Classic in Ohio and shoot the top fitness women, the same way, black & white in their hotel rooms. I photographed some amazing women that weekend, Susan Curry, Lena Johannesen, Minna Lessig, Timea Majorova, Ericca Kern, just to name a few. The photos above are from that weekend. My photo’s from that weekend ran in a large photo feature called “Behind Closed Doors”. I was then offered a contract to shoot for Muscle & Fitness exclusively for the next six years. When Joe sold his company to AMI, my contract was not renewed. Oh well.
